Does CNC Replace Craftsmanship?

There is a common assumption that CNC machining and craftsmanship belong to opposite worlds.

One is digital.

The other is manual.

One is associated with precision and repeatability.

The other with touch, judgement and experience.

But perhaps the distinction is too simple.

A CNC machine does not decide what should be made.

It does not understand why a particular curve matters.

It does not choose the proportion of an object, the relationship between surfaces, or the character that a material should express.

It executes a designed instruction.

That makes the relationship more interesting.

For us, CNC is not primarily a replacement for craftsmanship.

It is a translation tool.

An idea begins digitally. Geometry is developed. Toolpaths are calculated. A machine removes material according to those instructions.

Then the process becomes physical again.

Material behaviour appears.

Edges need attention.

Surfaces need finishing.

Small decisions emerge that were not completely visible on screen.

This is where technology and craft can meet.

The value is not necessarily in choosing between machine and hand.

It is in understanding where each is useful.

A CNC machine can extend what is possible.

Craftsmanship can give the result its judgement, sensitivity and character.

The interesting space is somewhere between the two.
